Louise Archer Elementary School
Louise Archer Elementary School
The Louise Archer Elementary School project involved a complete revitalization of an existing structure along with the addition of new spaces. The project entailed renovating the remaining 46,263 square-foot building after removing 6,675 square feet from the original 52,938 square-foot structure. In tandem, we constructed 57,885 square feet of additions across two floors, providing modernized facilities and expanded learning areas.
The renovation revealed an essential piece of history: the original 1939 exterior wall of the Vienna “Colored” School, later renamed Louise Archer Elementary. In collaboration with Architecture Inc., we preserved this legacy by incorporating the historic wall into the new design, ensuring it stands proudly as a living testament to the school’s roots. Visitors are greeted by this preserved artifact, complemented by a mural honoring Louise Archer, creating a meaningful connection between past and present generations of students, staff, and community members.
Another unique feature of this project was outdoor classroom spaces, which have now been established as the standard model across all Fairfax County Public Schools. These outdoor areas provide students and educators with environments to engage in innovative learning experiences while enjoying the benefits of fresh air and nature.
The revitalized school features a suite of modern enhancements, including new finishes, windows, doors and hardware, equipment, casework, plumbing fixtures and piping, sprinkler systems, and mechanical systems with dedicated outside air and VRF units for precise classroom temperature control. Additional upgrades include automatic temperature control systems, a new electrical service, energy-efficient lighting, electrical devices, electrical closets, and low-voltage systems.
The transformation extended to the site, where comprehensive work included demolition and new paving, parking improvements, stormwater controls, grading, and landscaping enhancements to support functionality and aesthetics.
The project was executed in carefully planned phases, as outlined in the construction phasing drawings, ensuring the Owner could maintain partial and continuous occupancy of the existing buildings throughout construction. This meticulous planning minimized disruptions and prioritized the continuity of school operations.
