Maryvale Elementary School/Carl Sandburg Learning Center

Maryvale Elementary School/Sandburg Learning Center, a groundbreaking educational facility spanning 165,000 square feet and nestled within a sprawling 17.67-acre campus.  This innovative project brings together two distinct schools under one roof, each tailored to meet the unique needs of their student body.

Maryvale Elementary School, catering to 600 K-5 students, boasts a specialized French immersion program, offering a dynamic learning environment for language acquisition.  Meanwhile, the Carl Sandburg Learning Center provides specialized instruction to 150 students, focusing on meeting the diverse educational needs of its attendees.

The project commenced with the complete demolition of the original structure, paving the way for constructing a modern, multi-functional school complex.  The new building seamlessly integrates the two schools, featuring a cohesive exterior design that presents itself as a unified entity with distinctive entrances differentiated by color.

Maryvale Elementary School occupies the northern end of the site, configured in a two-story layout surrounding a central courtyard.  Notably, an eight-classroom flex space on the second floor allows for future expansion to accommodate the evolving needs of both schools.  On the southern side, the Carl Sandburg Learning Center is thoughtfully designed as a single-story facility centered around its courtyard, optimizing accessibility and functionality.

To streamline traffic flow and enhance safety, separate bus loop lanes are designated for each program, complemented by a shared-use drop-off lane and ample parking facilities accommodating 176 cars and 27 buses. The project also prioritizes environmental sustainability, incorporating state-of-the-art stormwater management systems to comply with the latest Environmental Site Design regulations.

Beyond the classroom, the campus boasts newly developed athletic fields, basketball courts, and play areas, fostering a holistic approach to student well-being and recreation.  Furthermore, the project’s commitment to sustainability is underscored by its LEED Silver certification, reflecting its dedication to transportation access, energy efficiency, and the use of environmentally friendly materials and construction practices.

The Maryvale Elementary School/Sandburg Learning Center stands as a testament to innovation and collaboration, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and personally.
