Terra Centre Elementary School

We partook in a journey of transformation with the Terra Centre Elementary School project, where a mid-1970s design structure underwent a remarkable revitalization, breathing new life into its interior and exterior.  Once perceived as dark and unwelcoming, the building shed its former identity as a “bunker,” emerging as a beacon of modernity and innovation.

The project entailed a comprehensive overhaul of the 68,272 square-foot building, meticulously executed while the school remained occupied and fully functional.  Structured phases ensured the safety of staff, students, and visitors throughout the renovation process, demonstrating a commitment to continuity and well-being.

Internally, the renovation unfolded with the removal and installation of new mechanical, electrical, fire suppression, and life safety systems, significantly reducing the structure’s power demands while optimizing ventilation and lighting.  The entire interior underwent a dramatic transformation, with new layouts incorporating updated classrooms, restrooms, administration suites, and support spaces, aligning with contemporary learning standards.

Enhances natural lighting floods the interior spaces and classrooms, courtesy of increased exterior glass area and strategically positioned windows.  A rooftop addition, featuring a Green Roof, not only provides access to green space play areas but also serves as a light well, further enhancing the ambiance within the building.

Externally, the school received a facelift, boasting a sleek combination of brick and metal panel skin, complemented by new canopies that add architectural interest and functionality.  Site improvements, including a new student drop-off area, updated play areas, and enhanced stormwater management facilities, contribute to a safer and more efficient environment for students and staff.

A significant 20,123 square-foot addition introduces modern amenities such as a new media center, entrance lobby, expanded administration offices, classrooms, preschool facilities, and an art wing, further enriching the learning experience.

The new Terra Centre Elementary School encompasses 88,395 square feet of modern, functional space, thoughtfully designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s students.  With its well-lit interiors, contemporary finishes, and student-centric layout, the school stands as a testament to the power of revitalization and forward-thinking design in education.
