Neelsville Middle School Phase One

Neelsville Middle School Project: Phase One Completion

Initially established in 1981 on a 29.19-acre site, Neelsville Middle School has undergone numerous enhancements over the years, including life safety upgrades, the addition of a cooling tower, energy recovery systems, and various mechanical and electrical modifications. The original structure encompassed 131,432 square feet and accommodated 956 students.

Phase One Overview

The project’s first phase has successfully culminated in the construction of a new three-story educational facility situated at the center frontage of Frederick Road, replacing a portion of the existing school site. The new building boasts an impressive 162,684 square feet, increasing student capacity to 1,063. A master-planned addition of six classrooms is projected to expand this capacity to 1,190.

Designed to cater to Neelsville’s culturally diverse student population, the new facility features exceptional acoustics that support students learning English as a second language. The architecture emphasizes natural daylighting and offers beautiful views, with internal spaces organized around a central courtyard for outdoor classes and community gatherings.

Health and Sustainability initiatives were incorporated into the school’s innovative ventilation systems to ensure low CO2 levels, enhancing students’ attention and cognitive function. Committed to sustainability, the building is designed to achieve two Green Globes, focusing on energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and human wellness.

Site enhancement in phase one also includes an on-site parking area with a capacity for approximately 130 vehicles. The traffic circulation plan prioritizes pedestrian safety and minimizes overflow traffic onto Neelsville Church Road. New exterior lighting is strategically designed to minimize glare for nearby residences and reduce light pollution while ensuring safety and security.

A new on-site stormwater management system has been implemented, featuring micro-bio retention facilities to treat impervious surfaces and adhere to environmental site design regulations.

Looking Ahead to Phase Two

Phase two of the project is slated for completion in the summer of 2025. It will involve demolishing the existing school and building athletic facilities, including softball and soccer fields and tennis courts, where the current parking lot and school building stand.
